Burke, Adrian

I specialize in the prehistoric archaeology of northeastern North America. I am mainly interested in lithic technology (stone tools) and in particular in the use of raw materials, for instance the quarrying of and trade in these materials. My research includes the physical and chemical characterization of archaeological materials (rock, metal, glass) with analytical methods in physics, chemistry, engineering and geology, a field commonly known as archaeometry.

My latest fieldwork has focused on the recent prehistory of the Upper St. John River Valley (Quebec, Maine and New Brunswick), traditional Maliseet territory, and on the archaic period in the Trois-Rivières and Bécancour region. My other current projects include the procurement and use of lithic raw materials in the prehistoric period in New York and New England, Nunavik and the Northwest Territories, Central Mexico and southern France.
